My name is David Neely and I am a Photographer!
My interest in Photography began during my first year in College. I had a number of friends who were returning from military service and came back with nice 35mm film cameras purchased in the military stores on base. The college I was attending did not have any photography classes but they did have a school newspaper and yearbook and a darkroom. I spent many hours watching others process film and taking pictures on campus, so I quickly knew this was something I wanted to experience.
After college, knowing very little, but with the impatience of youth, I opening my own Photo business in my home town of Bethesda, Md. At first I did anything that came my way and mostly portraits and weddings. I quickly became tired of that and with the help of a local Advertising Agency I quickly moved into the Commercial market. In what seems like a 100 years ago my career grew quickly and I was soon bored with the limited market available in the Md and the Washington, DC area. Moving my wife Sheila and baby son Adam to Dallas, Texas was the big step I had been looking for. We setup a studio in downtown Dallas specializing in Commercial, Advertising and Fashion Photography. During those years I worked for most of the largest clients in the Southwest region. The studio grew and I had other photographers to help handle the work load. In the late 1990’s the local economy crashed and clients either went out of business or cut back drastically. After a period of struggle I closed the studio, having been burnt out and we moved to Arizona where I received my teaching credentials, allowing me to do what I had originally planned to do, which was teach.
My teaching career continues today, after 12 years teaching in Phoenix. My school was Metro Tech in central Phoenix and I taught a 2 year program in Photo Imaging. The kids and the experience was wonderful and a time in my life I will never forget. After retiring in 2009 we moved to the Prescott area to be closer to our son and his wife, not to mention our new granddaughter named Piper Colleen Neely. I still teach part time as an Adjunct Professor at Yavapai College in Prescott and I show my Fine Art Photography in local Galleries. I have been completely immersed in the photographic arts my entire adult life and that passion still burns strong! Photography is an amazing method to communicate your views, feelings and ideas to others and to show your passion for the world we live in. My work is what I call “Interpretive Photography” meaning that I try to show you and tell you what I see and feel.
Lastly I would like to thank my wife Sheila who has put up with all of this, and me, for 42 years and we are still going strong. Without her I would be eternally lost.
